Why?

Osteoporosis literally means “porous bone”, and is a condition in which bones become fragile and brittle, leading to a higher risk of fractures (breaks or cracks) than in normal bone1.

Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose minerals such as calcium more quickly than the body can replace them, leading to a loss of bone thickness (bone mass or density).

As a result, bones become thinner and less dense, so that even minor falls can cause serious fracture, especially to the spine, hip or wrist. Fractures of the spinal vertebrae may result in persistent back pain, curvature of the spine and loss of height2.

You can take action to minimise your risk of developing osteoporosis.  Bone health is maintained in the body by getting adequate Calcium, Vitamin D and exercise3.

FACT: 1 in 2 women and 1 in 3 men over 60 years in Australia will have an osteoporotic fracture4

Why?

Co-Enzyme Q10, is a fat soluble, vitamin-like substance critical to cellular energy production and the proper functioning of the heart and other muscles.

CoQ10 is found in the mitochondria of living cells.

CoQ10 promotes the proper transfer of electrons within the oxidative respiratory chain (or electron transport chain).

The purpose of the oxidative respiratory chain is to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Think of this as the “energy currency” of the living cells6.

Thus, adequate levels of CoQ10 at the cellular level are essential for effective energy production.

Why?

CoQ10 supplements are great for your cardiovascular health.

Supplemental CoQ10 alters the natural history of cardiovascular illnesses and has the potential for prevention of cardiovascular disease through the inhibition of LDL cholesterol oxidation.

CoQ10 also promotes the maintenance of optimal cellular and mitochondrial function throughout the damage of time and internal and external stresses6.

Studies have shown that routine CoQ10 supplementation can decrease the blood pressure of patients with hypertension7 . For adults susceptible to mild hypertension, CoQ10 may help return blood pressure to normal levels. Lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise should always be a prime consideration in management of mild hypertension.

Orally taken CoQ10 has an excellent safety profile. Adverse side effects are rare.

Why?

Statin therapy in Australia is on the rise. It is estimated that around 1 in 12 Australians take these cholesterol lowering drugs19.

Statins inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol. Because CoQ10 shares the same biosynthetic pathway as cholesterol, people taking statins will often see a depletion of their serum CoQ10 levels20.

  • 10-15% of statin users suffer from the side effect of myopathy (muscle pain, weakness and breakdown) 21
  • Some studies have shown that for people taking statins, daily doses of CoQ10 can help reduce symptoms of myopathy22
  • CoQ10 plays a critical role in intracellular energy   production and supports cardiovascular health.

Thus, dietary supplementation with CoQ10 may be useful in patients receiving statin therapy23   to maintain adequate energy levels.
